DesignMedix has a unique, rapid approach for developing drugs to overcome drug resistance. This platform approach is a way of making novel compounds by covalently linking a chemical moiety derived from a resistance reversal agent to a drug that has had strong resistance evolve against it, thereby creating a new drug that can fulfill both roles - drug and resistance reversal. Our anti-malaria compounds are orally active, kill multiple strains of drug-resistant human malaria parasites in human red blood cells, and cure malaria in mice. New antibacterials based on the same approach have broad-spectrum activity against multiple drug-resistant bacteria.
